• UO Giving Guide: Alyssa Coscarelli

The best gift is giving back. We're highlighting 8 inspiring young creatives and joining them in supporting 8 deserving charities this holiday season. See what they're wishing for this year, and learn more about how you can give back too.

This holiday season, editor Alyssa Coscarelli tells us why giving back is so important. We worked with her to support the Trans Lifeline by donating $5k on her behalf. Follow @Translifeline to learn more and donate!

    Name: Alyssa Coscarelli
    Occupation: Fashion Market Editor, Refinery29
    Charity: Trans Lifeline

Hi Alyssa! Can you tell us about your charity?
    Trans Lifeline
is a non-profit dedicated to the well-being of transgender people. It runs a hotline staffed by transgender people, for transgender people.

What makes it so important to you?
Everyone deserves someone to talk to, especially when going through life's challenges. Suicide rates are extremely high among the trans community, and it's organizations like this one that can really make a difference in trans people's lives and provide a support system that many trans people unfortunately might not have among their own friends, families, or communities. Trans is beautiful. Trans people deserve to be heard, loved, and supported.

What other causes are important to you right now?
So, so many causes need our support more than ever in the current political climate. Healthcare is at the forefront right now -- and I'm always doing whatever I can to support Planned Parenthood. I've also got everyone currently affected by the recent hurricanes at the top of my mind right now, from Houston to Puerto Rico.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever gotten from someone?
One-of-a-kind framed artwork made just for me.

Favorite gift you’ve ever given someone?
Sometimes I think my handwritten notes or cards are better than the gift itself.

What’s on your wish list this year?
No material things, just quality time with my family who I miss so much!

    Favorite holiday tradition?
To this day, we make chocolate chip cookies and leave them out with baby carrots for Santa and his reindeers. But, we don't make the cookies from scratch -- just the break-and-bake kind. And that's kind of what I love most about the tradition.

What holiday movie can you watch on repeat?
Home Alone (the original!) and Elf.

Proudest moment from this past year?
Raising thousands of dollars for Planned Parenthood through various charity clothing sales with my best friend Lauren. And, traveling the world with some of my favorite brands, from Nike to ASOS to Away.

What are your hopes and dreams for 2018?
Keep resisting. Making positive change on a personal and larger scale. And, I always hope to see more of the world with every passing year.
